When I was selected as a part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program to review a sample of Crisco® olive oils, I have to admit, I was pretty happy. I have used and still do use Crisco vegetable shortening as my brand of choice when possible, and as such I had high hopes for their blend of olive oils. Unfortunately, I wasn’t wowed.
Don’t get me wrong, these are not bad products. As far as being completely useable and as advertised, they work. But there’s just something… Homogenous about them. They’re too safe, too tame, too gentle for my tastes. Kind of like Cajun food without enough heat or Tex-Mex without enough cheese.
Yeah, like that.
Please note that I enjoy an aggressive olive oil, so my opinion may not reflect yours. If you prefer a mild olive oil, you’re going to love this stuff. Also, anything shipped to me has to travel either by air or by water, so may have experienced environmental extremes which may influence the flavor, though I doubt that is the case here, as the weather across the board has been wonderful.
In short, If you’re looking for an olive oil that’s light, mild and will play well with your food, Crisco will work for you. If you’re looking for something that makes a statement, this is probably not the choice for you.
